ITP 320 (Enterprise Wide Information Systems) students will play a simulation game to develop a thorough understanding of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning). ITP has a University Alliance with SAP which is the world's largest vendor of ERP software. Throughout the semester students have explored how large enterprises use ERPs to integrate all business functions and processes. For the last 5 weeks for the semester teams of students form a company, acquire raw materials, produce finished goods, price and advertise them to sell in a dynamic market.
Students are put in a situation in which they have to run their business with a real-life ERP (SAP R/3). Teams of five to six students each operate a firm in a made-to-stock manufacturing supply chain and must interact with supplier and customer teams by sending and receiving orders, delivering their products and completing the whole cash-to-cash cycle. A simulation program and computer-automated script were developed to automate the sales process, so that every firm receives a large number of orders in each period of the simulation. Using standard reports, students must analyze these transactional data to make business decisions and ensure the profitability of their operations.
